Krispn Given is the Apiculture Specialist in the Department of Entomology at Purdue University. He is recognized as one of the leading authorities in the field of instrumental insemination and honey bee breeding. Mr. Given started breeding bees 26 years ago conducting research with 150 colonies looking for solutions to improve honey bee health. Today he continues to run the honey bee breeding program at Purdue, teaching annual queen rearing short courses in addition to managing the honey bee laboratory and extension and student activities.
Krispn teaches the instrumental insemination class each year at the university attracting researchers and bee breeders worldwide, annually gives lectures to beekeeper’s and researchers at national and international conferences. As a honey bee breeder and researcher, Given is focused on selecting for hierarchical behavioral resistance to varroa destructor by selecting bees with desirable behavioral traits, grooming/mite-biting. He was instrumental in developing the “Mite-biter” honey bee strain, where they have demonstrated high-selected bees that chew upwards of 50% of the mites that are groomed off their body’s. The primary mechanism of defense is the ability to groom themselves free of varroa mites and bite them.
